‘Apron Strings’ is about Jan Wong’s journey with her 22-year-old son

Canadians have been absorbing the words, ideas, and sometimes-controversial opinions of Jan Wong for more than three decades. She’s the bestselling author of non-fiction, and you might also know her as an award-winning journalist whose daring style of reporting earned her a reputation as a national provocateur.

Jan now has a new book. Apron Strings is about a journey she took with her 22-year-old son to France, Italy, and China, where they stayed with local families to research their food culture.

Sounds like a dream, right? Well, her son wasn’t so enthusiastic at first.

“It took him a long time to say yes,” Jan told us when she swung by our studio to promote the book.

Watch in the video clip above as Jan tells us more about their experience abroad and what they learned about the cultures they were experiencing.
