The real-life events that inspired ‘The Hate U Give’

The Hate U Give has been called the young adult novel of the decade. It spent over 23 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and has been published in over 20 countries. (Fun fact: It was even one of our Social Chapter picks!)

The book tells the story of Starr, a young girl who witnesses her best friend get shot and killed by police.
Written by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give was inspired by her own childhood combined with headlines from the news and the Black Lives Matter movement.

We spoke with Angie about the real-life events that led her to write this novel, her fear of the book not getting published, and the upcoming movie adaptation.

Watch our conversation with Angie in the video clip above.
