Celebrities with the biggest impact on home prices

Would you pay more for a home if you knew your favourite celebrity used to live there? Depending on the celebrity, buyers could end up paying more or less than the average price, compared to other homes in the area.

Real estate expert Karyn Filiatrault shows us which Hollywood A-Listers have the biggest effect on the sale price of their homes.

Robert Pattinson

  • Pattinson had been living in the home with Kristen Stewart until she was caught cheating on him; that prompted Stewart to leave the home, and eventually, Pattinson left, too
  • Jim Parsons of “The Big Bang Theory” bought the home from Pattinson for $6.3 million
  • Pattinson got 202 per cent above the average price per square foot for other homes in the area
  • The 4,026-square-foot house has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and is loaded with architectural details; the grounds feature numerous patio spaces, water features, a pond, pool and city views

Leonardo DiCaprio

  • The actor first listed his beachside property as a rental in May 2012 and asked for $75,000 a month
  • Six months later, he decided to list the house for $23 million but when it didn’t sell, DiCaprio decreased the asking price by $4.1 million, finally selling it a little more than six months ago for $17.35 million
  • The seven bedroom, six bath home measured 2,633 square feet and was sold for 91 per cent more than what the average price per square footage was going for in the area

Jim Carey

  • The actor first listed his Malibu Colony home in 2011 but couldn’t sell it; fortunately for Carrey, the home sold for $13.4 million
  • It was definitely an uptick from Carrey’s purchase price of $9.75 million back in 2002
  • He got 61 per cent above the average price per square foot of other homes in the same area
  • Carrey’s former contemporary home is set up as an entertainer’s estate, with indoor spaces that flow into several decks and patios, all facing the Pacific Ocean
  • The home is on the smaller side for a Malibu mansion, measuring 2,866 square feet, with three bedrooms and four baths

Khloe Kardashian

  • One month after Khloe Kardashian filed for divorce from basketball star, Lamar Odom, she put her California home on the market.
  • The couple bought the home in 2009 for $3.95 million and sold it earlier this year for $5.49 million
  • She got 52 per cent above the average asking price for similar homes in the area
  • The 8,400-square-foot Mediterranean compound has six ensuite bedrooms outfitted with “exquisite designer details” including textured wallpaper, tumbled stone and mosaic accents; the master suite showcases city views and boasts custom built-ins and a mosaic-tiled fireplace
  • The spa-like master bath has dual sinks, a spa tub, shower with personalized temperature settings, and three custom-built walk-in closets

  • Her former bachelorette hideout, perched in the Beverly Glen neighborhood of Beverly Hills, sold for $6.4 million
  • She got 26 per cent above the average asking price for a non-celeb-owned home in the same area

  • The house has a walled and gated courtyard with koi pond, “landscaped park-like grounds” and a swimming pool

Ryan Reynolds

  • He bought his Hollywood Hills bachelor pad in the celebrity-entrenched neighbourhood of Outpost Estates for $1.7 million, before his marriage to actress Scarlett Johansson
  • He got 19 per cent above the average asking price for a non-celeb-owned home in the same area BUT he actually lost money on the house
  • Measured only 1,789 square feet and seems to be a remnant of a simpler past, before he struck gold in the business
  • With just two bedrooms and 2.5 baths, the home is not a typical over-the-top celeb estate. Measuring only 1,789 square feet, the home does have upgrades, including hardwood floors, solar heating, a tank-less water heater and private, landscaped garden

Mark Wahlberg

  • After a series of price chops, as well as some time on and off the market, the actor and former rapper's Beverly Hills house sold for $12.9 million
  • He got three per cent below the average price of other homes in the area but he still made a whopping $8.045 million profit
  • The home was built in 1985, but after Wahlberg bought it in 2001 for $4.95 million he began a full renovation to get it up to his star standards; one of the biggest additions was a full gym, which is where he reportedly did most of the training for his role in the award-winning film “The Fighter”
  • Sitting on 1.73 acres, the 11,500 square foot house is typical of a celebrity home, surrounded by high walls and situated in a gated and private community

  • The pop sensation dropped the asking price of her Hollywood Hills home by $430,000 and eventually sold it for $5.5 million
