5 under-the-radar romantic getaways

Jade Mountain Resort
There’s nothing wrong with the usual suspects when it comes to romantic cities – places like Paris and New York—but part of being romantic is finding a place that is perfect for your relationship and your couple personality. Choosing somewhere your partner isn’t expecting can add to the anticipation and excitement. There’s something to be said for spontaneity, right?

See below for travel expert Heather Greenwood-Davis' suggestions!

If your idea of romance is getting away from the frenetic pace of everyday life… try St. Lucia

St. Lucia is gorgeous on its own but a stay at Jade Mountain will feel like you’ve elevated even that. The hotel was recently listed as one of the top 50 most romantic places in the world by National Geographic. Its location is part of the charm. Every suite is missing the fourth wall so you actually feel like you’re sleeping outside. Plus, the food is incredible. Led by chef Allen Susser, a winner of the James Beard Foundation's Best Southeast Chef award, you’ll eat the best of the area.

If your idea of romance is exploring and checking out architecture… try Palm Springs

What I love about this city is that it captures an era in its architecture. Much of the town offers a mid-century modern vibe. While you’re there you can hike the Araby Trail where you can get a gorgeous view of the Coachella Valley and when you’re ready to explore further you can organize a tour of some of the incredible former homes of people like Bob Hope and Elvis Presley. The Obamas are currently staying in a private mansion and you can do the same, but if you’d prefer a hotel stay, try The Parker Palm Springs. I love that the modern hotel still holds on to that 50’s era vibe.

If your idea of romance is luxury and isolation in one… try Clayoquot Wilderness Resort

If what you want is to get away from it all for some pampered quiet time in a gorgeous location, where you want to go is the Relaix and Chateau property Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in BC. Set on the Bedwell River in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, the property offers 27 luxury glamping style tents with real beds, oriental rugs, bathrooms with heated floors, outdoor showers, daily yoga and spa treatments – all at your fingertips. If the price tag there is too exorbitant, perhaps Tofino is more your speed. You’ll still get that gorgeous landscape and incredible food and service, but I can’t guarantee you won’t bump into a person or two. Try Wickaninnish Lodge (spa treatments are divine) or the apartment style stays and floor to ceiling windows at Pacific Sands Resort where you can also bring your dogs with you.

If your idea of romance is Paris… try Munich

There is nowhere else in the world quite like Paris but if you want to get some of that European charm at a better price point and have plenty to gaze at while you do it, you’ve got to take a trip to Munich, Germany.  You’re going to book into the luxurious (and historic) Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski on the Maximillian Strade which has a Champs Elysee meets Yorkville feel but is central to everything you’ll need.  You’re steps from the opera house and the cobblestone downtown streets as well as incredible museums and shops. Much like Paris, It’s a city that feels like a village. It has an incredible history, art, architecture, cozy restaurants and people here are friendly, welcoming and open.

If you just want to go somewhere great with friends, a significant other, or even solo… try Vail

Gorgeous locations aren’t just for relationships. Toast your independence and the fact that you can sleep like a starfish in a King-sized bed with a trip out to The Four Seasons in Vail. Sidle up to the bar and one of their signature singles cocktails.
