How to rock bold and beautiful hair

Colour Your Hair to Conquer Cancer is a bold and engaging new fundraising initiative being brought to Canadians by The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. The program invites Canadians to colour their hair and raise funds to support cancer research at one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world – Princess Margaret Cancer Research Centre.

Matthew Collins has tips on how to get bold, beautiful hair.

Where to start:
  • It’s easiest to go bold if you’re starting with light hair, but you can go bold with dark hair too! You’ll just have to spend a bit more time at the salon to lighten to the desired shade before adding the bold colour.
  • That said, there are many temporary colour options out there available at your local drugstore that can go straight on top of dark hair for an instantly bold look.
What to Expect with Semi-Permanent Colour:
  • Depending on how often you wash your hair, you can get up to six weeks or more out of your colour. That said, certain shades like red, deep blue or deep green tend to stay in the hair much longer.
  • If you require a quicker fade time, your hairstylist can mix the colour with conditioner when applying.
  • It’s best to wash your hair as little as possible and with cool water to maintain colour. The opposite applies if you want more of a faded look, and in that case, wash more frequently with warm water.
  • If you need the colour out quickly, dish soap will do the trick!
  • I love a simple, effortless look with a bold colour.
  • On longer hair, I like to use a large barrel iron to create a slip wave. Simply bend the bend the mid shaft of the hair around the barrel and leave the ends straight.
  • On shorter hair, I like to add texture using a flat iron, bending sections back and forth to create a wavy look.
  • With temporary colour, I suggest styling the hair first, and then applying the colour. OR, spray, let dry and then use your hot tool, but this can get messy, so be cautious!
