Beauty rituals to try for the Lunar New Year

Chinese New Year is right around the corner and there are a lot of traditions that come along with this celebration, including sporting a fresh new look as a way to bring good fortune and happiness.

The Kit Chinese editor Renée Tse highlights some of the beauty rituals surrounding the Lunar New Year and the products to go along with them so we can all reel in some luck and happiness in the Year of the Dog!

Ritual 1: Dewy Skin
Dewy skin is not only one of the hottest beauty trends right now, but it’s also a sign of how healthy and young you look. It’s important to kick off the New Year with a healthy glow, so you can face the year with a brighter outlook.

Biotherm Life Plankton Essence Limited Jumbo Edition
This is the special Chinese New Year edition of Biotherm’s Life Plankton Essence (notice the red packaging!) and essences are known as “immortal water” in some parts of Asia because of their anti-aging benefits. Essences are an important first step after cleansing your skin because they help hydrate and deliver benefits on a cellular level so that the products that follow absorb more easily.

This essence can help skin regenerate in just over a week thanks to its cell-regenerating and plumping patented formula, life plankton, which is inspired by the living micro-organism found in the miraculous “fountain of youth” (a.k.a the hot springs of French Pyrenees).

Givenchy Chinese New Year Prism Libre
One of Givenchy’s best-sellers is getting the Chinese New Year treatment as well. Prism Libre's shade No. 1 Mousseline Pastel combines four complementary pastel shades (blue, pink, purple and green) to create a customized, colour-correcting finish for a natural, luminous complexion. Simply blend all the colours together and apply it onto your face with the puff to even out the skin tone. You can also apply it in areas where you want to mattify and/or highlight.

Ritual 2: Brighten
The key is to brighten up your face with certain products like eyeshadow and blush to harness the luck and happiness in the coming year.

Paul & Joe Face & Eye Color
The eyes are very important because they are the windows to our soul, so it’s crucial to brighten them up with the help of luminescent eyeshadow. This collection by Paul & Joe is great because it helps enhance your skin tone and give a beautiful lustre that amplifies natural beauty on the eyes and face. Dual purpose powder can be blended to be bold or can be added for subtle radiance.

Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips in Carina's Love
This matte, longer-lasting finish means you would actually be eating your food and not your lipstick. No need to constantly retouch after each bite. The creamy formula leaves lips feeling soft and supple – no cracks here! This lipstick is named after Hong Kong superstar actress Carina Lau because it happens to be one of her favourite colours. A vibrant red that looks good on any skin tone and the bullet itself is formulated with an antioxidant that helps protect UV damage.

Ritual 5: Refresh Your Hair
You want to clean, cut and refresh your hair before the New Year to "wash" away last year's bad luck, but not on New Year’s Day so you don’t spoil the luck.

Garnier Color Vibrancy Treat with Goji Extract
Garnier’s new multi-use hair treatment can be used post-shampoo as a conditioner; as a 1-minute hair mask; or a leave-in conditioner on dry hair for those frizzy days to help restore smoothness and shine to all hair types. It features goji extract and goji berries have been used in Chinese medicine for generations. It’s a powerful antioxidant believed to help you live longer. While there is no scientific fact to back this claim, this hair mask will definitely help you make your hair feel healthy and full of life!

Ritual 6: Mandarin Orange
Mandarin oranges are important to place around your home during this time of year. The Chinese word for mandarin is synonymous with the word “lucky”, so surrounding yourself with the aroma of mandarin orange is said to bring riches into your life and give off fortune-filled vibes.
